G-string

G-string Defined
A g-string is the union of the string culotte and the tanga, or from another vector the marriage of a waistband and a cache-sexe. Like the tanga, the g-sting is essentially a culotte that covers the pubis and leaves the buttocks bared; unlike the tanga its side and rugae material are strictly string; it is not usually worn high-waisted and tends to follow a v-kini waistline. For these reasons it is treated as a separate species.
The g-string is a garment utilized in bikini, but it is also found in underwear and is an aspect of the maillot g-string, a.k.a. the maillot tanga. See also buttage, and the loincloth.

Origin of the G-string
The g-string covers only the pubic hair and sex organ and recycles modern woman with Eve, Africa, and the ecdysiast. If indeed in the late 1980s the g-string bikini evolves from the tanga, it is none-the-less a garment with a prehistory. For modern middle class woman to wear a g-string she must first accept both her native as well as presentational self.
G-strings are classically worn by savages of both sexes (fig. 35-9), athletes (fig. 35-10), and artists models.
Aside from natives and these professional classes, in the pre-bikini era g-strings are worn by chorus girls; indeed the term emerges in 1887 America, possibly a reference to a groin string as a minimal costume for dancers and strippers. In burlesque g-strings are sometimes worn with pasties, a trend which remains in the 1990s (M199310, T199310).
Trendy women begin wearing g-string simultaneous with tanga during the late 1980s and early 1990s. In France, the g-string emerges ex post facto topless in the late 1960s, first in the pinup (BR197330) and fashion press (E197501, V8106), and eventually on the real beach (SM8813, G8880, G8881). In other words, French women took their tops off in the nombril era, before they reduced culotte to g-string.
In America, g-string predates the arrival of topless. It appears in media during the early 1980s (HM8402, N8602, V8605, V8612) and makes its first appearances on the real beach in the late 1980s, e.g., (FL8710, PB87CA). On topped beaches string halters and bras are predominant silhouette partners. High beach is very rare venue (CB9113-14). When toplessness does emerge American topless women often appear g-stringed (). Maybe the ones who want to go topless also want to wear the least ().
But no matter by what cultural evolutionary path, the topless g-string, and its male counterpart, le cachet (also called a cache-sexe) does define the swimsuit minimum. Without it, the wearer is nude, and in this respect the topless tanga silhouette of the late 1990s is the opposite of Eve and her fig leaf. With an exposure code of TMLBA and often with N negative, this movement includes not only tanga and g-string, but also sideless, loincloth, as well as maillot de roulè tangaed. The dispersion of the TMLBA silhouette on beach venues world wide, from the more private (e.g., PRI8502) to the very public (), marks a new era, and by the early 2000s unites the beach with the dance house world.
But the result by either cultural evolution is the topless tanga silhouette (late 1990s), an exposure code of TMLBA and often with N negative. This movement includes not only tanga and g-string, but also sideless, loincloth, as well as maillot de roulè tangaed.

G-string Variations
Variations in the g-string include material and patterns, size, opacity, and the way in which the g-string is tied. There are many ways to tie g-strings and these are examined in detail below.
The construction of the g-string is most-often a simple inverted triangle with no seams although it is occasionally seamed up the center front. The cloth may be cut considerably larger than the area of the pubic hair, or small enough to force shaving. Hairage is not usually seen publicly
The g-string intersects with the adjustable, primarily in the case where slide-casings are employed to narrow the suit. Casings at the waistline are optional and allow the wearer to ease the front wider or smaller (G8881). Narrowed fronts can reveal inguinal and a most minimal adjustment may show hairage (RD8734, JB8705) if the subject is not shaven. Culotte with string slide casings in the back, which tease coverages of the buttocks (C8909, JD89FB), are perhaps more correctly specied as tanga, but are also called g-strings by many observers. Slide casings can also exist on both the front and back (CM8503, CM8481, CM8482, CB8, TL86). An adjustable is distinguished from a pure string, because in a pure string only a loop is allowed (G8880).
   A strapped g-string is another possibility (CB199399, SR199411).

G-string size table
Sizes of g-strings can vary from the large to the pico and are (obviously) closely coupled with the exposure of inguinal and hairage. The famous crochet bikinière, Annie l'String of Ft. Lauderdale, bases size on the number of stitches up the front, across the front, and up the back:

Large       14      28    26
Medium   13      26    24
Small       12      24    24
Mini        10      20    24
Micro        8      16    24
Pico           6      12   18

Example of Annie l'String g-strings include a large, a medium dark green (FL87TE), a small pink (PB87CA, KP88F9, LO8912, JD89LA), a mini in either solid lavender (KP88F6, RD89G3) or open mesh beige (PB87SE), or the micro, both in a green closed (PRI8805) and an orange open mesh micro execution (PRI8804, JD89LD, JD89M0, JE8910E, JE9028, AB9359BS). Suits that are small risk hairage, mini sizes ensure it is in constant play, and with micros hairage is unavoidable, as in this white Rosebra creation (JE9025).
Opacity is especially an issue with crochet g-strings, where they may be made with closed () or open mesh (JE9214). But g-strings may also be made of see-through material (including plastic (AB1993)), as well as with see-through-when- wet fabric (SI198630).

Tieing Variations
Another variation of a true g-string is that it may be tied many ways--so tieology remains a significant theme.
Some g-strings contain elastic sides and have no tie at all (FL87TE, JDC89, KP880J04). It is not uncommon to tie g-string at each side of the waist (PRI8805, JE9028). If one string is long and the other short one can arc the body and tie once, although twice is an option. Still another variation is drawing the front strings around and tying in back and drawing the back strings around to tie in the front near the navel (LO8912, AB9359BS). The g-string may also be enriched by threading the halter through the sides (JD89I0).
Sometimes the strings cross hips so the apex of the posterior rugage is above the fastening point (), other times the "Y" lies above or exactly in the crevice.

Men in G-strings
Needless to say, males can wear g-strings also, but they are rare even on topless beaches (G8834, G8878) and gay beaches (RP89, SR199415).

The Conclusion
With the g-string the bikini becomes obsolete, and modernism becomes full circle. Piercing and body decoration stand prepared to enter stage.

Topless G-string
The topless g-string represents the most minimal bikini.
