Tieology: Ties Unties and Reties

Introduction
Many factors play into making a bikini erotic but the superior bikiniite is always a master at tieology, the art and science of strapplay, and the possibilities of ties, unties and reties, especially as they apply to the neck, shoulder, and back straps of the soutien-gorge, depending if it is a bra, halter or bandeau.
Tieology includes a discussion of strap offshoulders and strapoffs because, while strictly speaking these actions may not involve ties or unties, they do involve a play and/or removal of a strap.
Tieology is intimately related to fastenology, the study of fasteners and unfastening, if only because the tie is a form of fastener. The difference in these two topics is that tieology focuses on the various methods by which straps may be removed and replaced, whereas the fastening study inventories items of closure and the implications of their mechanisms.
To repeat, tieology focuses on the varieties of action of doffing, donning and otherwise repositioning the three strap possibilities of the bikini top: the shoulder strap (of the bra), the neck strap (of the halter), and the back strap (of the bra, halter, or bandeau).
This section concludes by pointing to how tieology is applied to the bikini bottom and the maillot.

Offshoulder and Strapoff
The most elementary gesture pertaining to the shoulder strap is the offshoulder, in which the bikiniite permits the shoulder strap of the bra to slide off the top of the shoulder, be it a little or a lot (BSD8843). The effect occurs both accidentally as well as a seduction and is one of those borderline acts which may well be impossible to decode correctly. As it is a tease it has no opposite, except that the bikiniite slides the strap back into place. Done with finesse, it it puts cleavage into risk, and is an initial step in a topoff.
Should the shoulder strap fall off at least 90 degrees, to the point of the elbow, it is now simple to slip the arm out of the strap entirely, an action called a strapoff.
Offshoulders and strapoffs may well increase cleavage, increase the risk of cleavage, and increase the risk of full breast exposure by destabilizing the top, even with the maillot (CI8907). The justification, of course, is to avoid those awful tan lines the straps leave!

Neckstrap Unfastening
One of the most familiar unties is the neckstrap untie. This has play with the halter (VB8411, FL8612), as well as the bandeau with neckstrap accessory (WB8412). This action is frequently performed while the bikiniite is lying on her stomach, but it may also be performed sitting, standing, or laying on ones back (VB8427). For the sitting or standing subject, it remains for the design of the bikini to determine the elevation of risk. The candid bikiniite might untie her straps to appply lotion and expose more than intended--or not (G8848). The astute bikiniite can tuck her straps into what has now become a bandeau (WB8503, FL8612, RP8805), or simply leave them dangling (DB8202). The bikiniite who unties and lies on her back flaunts her risk (WB8409, CI8903), because unthoughtful movement will produce unanticipated exposures, or deliberate ones (CI8908).

Backstrap Unfastening
Backstrapunfasten, performed in all soutien-gorge species, is most frequently performed while the subject is prone, and lying on her belly. Avoidance of tan lines is almost always the stated excuse for this scenario, in which the subject lies on her top. The trade off is elevated risk of cleavage to the sides of the breasts (CB9005), which can escalate into areolage and nipple peeks, although this canbe ameliorated by gathering a towel underneath (FL8613)..
When backstrap unfastening is performed with a bra (FL8601) or halter, the status of the shoulder or neck straps plays a key roll in moderating this risk--maintaining either means with than with any sudden rise the loose bikini at least stays affixed to the body. If these ties are undone, or, as in the case of bandeau, simply absent, then the bikiniite who is careless or startled can literally leave her top behind her (RN7301).
Only the most sophisticated bikiniite dares to attempt walking with both the backstrap and neckstrap untied (FL8602).
Backstraps can also be unfastened when the subject is lying on her back, or perhaps wants to roll over without going through the bother of fastening the top. In this situation the top lies on top of the breasts, covering them no doubt, in a cat and mouse temptation moderated by gravity.
Another minor variation of backstrapuntie is when the single fastener is in the front of the garment.

Reties
Another form of strap play is to retie the straps into another formation, and no garment is better than the string triangle halter for this purpose. This maneuver is often skillfully done in full public view, with the bikiniite either carefully controlling her exposures to ensure nothing improper is viewed, or more casually negotiating the pass so that the keen eye can catch fleeting views of forbidden parts.
Examples of reties include string halter neck straps being retied into shoulder straps (SE9114C) (and visa versa), and neck (and occasionally shoulder) straps being tied around the body bandeau style (LG8440, FL8600, KW8608, AC8903). The string slide-side may also be retied as a bandeau (WB8401, CI8501, CI8502), bra, and some other configureations (RL9171).
Reties even emerge as a sales theme, as one manufacture promotes a "six-way" tie top which allows its wearer a variety of tying alternatives.

Criss-Cross
Another variation on the halter backstrap tie is to gather the ties around the body so they cross in the back, and then tie them together in the front, near the navel. This silhouette works especially well with the slide-side halter and v-kini, often with the strings passed through the sides of the briefs before tying in the front (LR86BD) or at the side (WB8403). This deployment also works with a normal string halter as well, both with passing the strings through the top of the culotte (VB8408, VB8410, JD89I0), as well as keeping them independent.

Culotte and Maillot
Ties unties and reties may also play a role in the bikini brief, and nowhere is the play more serious that in the sidetie and its eventual descendent, the string culotte (PH8220, G8853). Other variations are detailed at the lattice-side, and the g-string. But the simple fact remains that a culotte must be fastened at either one or both sides and/or the crotch.
The maillot is a more complicated study. It may have straps like a bra, halter, or bandeau and is subject to all of the same variations as the soutien-gorge. It may also have sides that open and it may have a crotch that opens. And it may have multiple resolutions (WB8411).
These subjects are left for the Bikini Scientist to explore.
