The Purpose of Tags
The tag of the bikini is a small piece of cloth (and often two pieces) identifying the manufacturer, location of manufacture, the size, and other information about the swimsuit. The second tag often includes information about the blend of the fabric and washing instructions.
The tag is usually located on the back of the swimsuit and is an aid to getting it on correctly, that is, with the front side facing forward. Tags are sometimes in both halfs of a bikini, sometimes not. This is not always obvious. Tags in hook-bra type tops are located in the center back as well, but in string bikini tops tags are often located within the halter cups themselves.
Tags are supposed to remain hidden, and although it devalues a swimsuit to remove them, many bikiniites simply cut them out.

The Designer Touch
But during the 1990s conspicuous consumption emerged as a trend, and with it the display of brand became important. Although brands have always embolden artifacts like cars in the from of a hood ornament, for example, their display in clothing is a new phenomena. In a sense the tag migrated from the inside of the swimsuit to the outside.
