Family Portrait Very Formal

Long Island Beach, New York

c. 1879 AB187910

Costume
Men and women in jackets, trousers and black and brown longsleeve bathingdresses, hats and parasols.
Children in dresses, jackets and trousers.

   None.

Actions
Portrait time at the seaside as the photographer captures a family. In the background, the puppet show plays on (1).

Commentary
This very crisp rendering brings colors and details from the past to the present. Although we tend to think about painting as an art about color, technique and form, it can also, as we see here, provide us with a "snapshot" of the past, including social documentation, fashion, family life, and entertainments.
